Lucchese fights Tonkawa into overtime

Lucchese Polo (John Muse, Andres Weisz, MagooLaprida and NicoPieres) went into Saturday's match against Tonkawa 2-0 in the Joe Barry Memorial Cup. The team began strong and kept the lead through the first half. But at the end of regulation play Lucchese and Tonkawa were tied at 9-9, forcing the match into sudden death overtime — which Tonkawa ended with a goal.

Magoo Laprida scored the first goal of the game, and Lucchese led by one goal advantage during each of the first three chukkers. 

Pololine reports that in the fourth period, “It must be mentioned that Lucchese kept Tonkawa from scoring until the final two minutes with Inaki Laprida converting a 30-yard penalty shot for a goal and adding a goal from the field with three seconds left in the chukker.” It was in this moment that the lead switched hands from Lucchese to Tonkawa, resulting in a score of 6-5. 

Towanka controlled the game in the fifth and sixth chukkers, despite three goals from Lucchese’s Pieres and one from Laprida. The game ended 9-9, and the teams broke for a brief intermission before continuing in overtime. 

Ultimately, Tonkawa converted a 30-yard shot for the winning goal following a Lucchese foul. 

In total, Magoo Laprida and Nico Pieres each scored four times for Lucchese, with Andres Weisz adding a single goal in the loss.

Progression Tonkawa: 0-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-5, 8-5, 9-9. 10-9 

A shootout took place on Monday, January 19th between the Bracket 1 teams with a 2-1 tournament record. This included Audi, Lucchese and Tonkawa. The results determined 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Bracket. 

The result of the shootout was a celebratory one, and Lucchese will progress to the semifinals on Wednesday, January 21st.
